About Massurrealism :

Massurrealism is a form of art that is rooted in the combination of mass media related art [ such as pop art ] and surrealist imagery. Essentially it is an evolution of surrealism that is strongly influenced by mass-media and technology. With interest begining in 1992, artists began writing about massurrealism. These essays came from a variety of artists including digital artists, video artists, as well as art directors and graphic designers. One important point about massurrealism is the common thread among massurrealists, the marriage of pop-art/mass media subjects and techniques to the surreal, which are individually expressed in each artist. These are just a few techniques that bridge the gap between the "traditional" and the newer media. As time progresses, newer media and technology are being discovered. The evolving computer technology alone is changing what is considered "mass-media". A world wide, grass-roots art interest, massurrealism follows this evolution, embodies the mystery of today's society. Expressions of the imagination and the creativity are what surround its inspiration.

Pop-Art, Mass Media, Technology and Surrealism

What is Pop-art?

Have you seen Andy Warhol's paintings of his Campbell's Soup cans? Pop-art is a form of technology art. Pop Art is images of popular things. Pop-art is images of ordinary objects, mass produced common everyday items that most people like and recognize. items like record labels, or logos, or packaging, and fashion pictures of people, Road signs, hamburgers, money, soda bottles, ( you know, stuff you see around you, anything currently in vogue RIGHT NOW) and machinery are also common subjects. Pop-art is also subjects and techniques taken from commercial artists, such as computer art, or silk screen images by Robert Rauschenberg, or comic book panels by Roy Lichtenstein. Almost any symbol of modern industrial life may be considered pop-art. Also included are themes of popular culture taken from movies, television, and advertising art.
Examples : Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg

What is Mass-Media?

Pop-art is also influenced by mass-media. Webster's dictionary definition of Mass-media: A means of communication (newspapers, radio, motion pictures, television) that is designed to reach the "mass" (majority, most people) of people that it tends to set standards, ideals, and aims of the masses. That is to say, mass-media is a way of sending a message to a vast number of people, and mass media can also influence this vast number of people's way of thinking. Because Mass-media can influence popular culture, it also influences pop-art. Hence, mass-media has influence on massurrealism. Given: mass-media is influenced by definition of technology: the body of knowledge (applied sciences, industrial arts) available to a civilization that is of use in fashioning implements, practicing manual arts and skills, or the system which society provides itself with those things needed or desired.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism is art that is much like your dreams. Surrealism is fantasy, world of dreams, (such as paintings by Giorgio de Chirico) and/or off-beat, odd images. Some surrealist art is mysterious or scary, like fantasy pictures taken from children's books, or the feeling like you are on your own episode of the Twilight Zone. Some surrealist art also uses symbolism, or warps an object in some way, like Salvadore Dali's paintings of a strange world. Paintings by ReneMagritte also had an-off beat oddness in them.
Examples : Rene Magritte, Salvadore Dali, Giorgio de Chirico

:icongreengrass:
how can you include off-beat/odd images as a possible definition of surrealism? Sure, generally surrealist works are offbeat/odd, but that's not what makes them surrealist. That's like saying "What is a pencil? A pencil is a graphite based writing utensil and/or a long thin yellow thingy". And pop art is the epitome of badness! You are all fiends!

--
Yeah, so much for gravity.
:iconniwi:
does this group serve some sort of oracular function or shall i be required to beat you?
